Tooth-coloured and self-ligating brackets cost more to make. Lingual braces are usually custom-made for the back of your teeth and take longer to fit. All three usually cost more than metal braces. A gum check comes first
Teeth move through the bone that holds them, so the gums need to be healthy before braces go on. Dr. Sivaranjani, whose MDS is in periodontics (the gums and the bone around the teeth), checks your gums at the consultation. Gum disease is usually treated before braces go on. What decides the cost of braces
- How complex your case is. Mild crowding or a small gap needs less work than a deep bite, a crossbite or severe crowding.
- How long treatment takes. Most people wear braces for one to two years (12–24 months). A complex bite can take longer and needs more adjustment visits.
- Treatment needed first. You may need a clean, fillings, gum treatment or extractions to make space.
- Breakages. Ask whether replacing a broken bracket is included. Hard and sticky food is the usual cause.
- Retainers. After braces, a retainer holds the teeth in place. It can be a removable retainer, or a thin bonded wire on the inside of the front teeth.

Braces or clear aligners: which costs more?
It depends on the aligner system and your case. At our clinic, clear aligners from Indian brands start lower than braces, while Invisalign starts higher. A complex case usually needs more aligners, which costs more. Aligners are nearly invisible and come out for eating and brushing. They work as planned only if worn for most of the day and night; at our clinic we ask for 20–22 hours a day. The braces treatment steps
- Consultation. We examine your bite, teeth and gums and ask what bothers you about your smile.
- Records and plan. X-rays, photos and moulds are taken. You get a plan and a written estimate.
- Getting ready. Any cavities are filled and any gum problems treated before the brackets go on.
- Fitting. The brackets are bonded to the teeth and the wire is placed. Expect some tightness for a few days.
- Adjustments. Short visits; at our clinic usually every 4–6 weeks, set for your plan.
- Removal and retainers. The braces come off and your retainers are fitted.

How many sittings are required for braces?
Expect a consultation, a records visit and the fitting. Then come short adjustment visits for the length of treatment, followed by removal and retainer checks. Are braces painful?
Having braces fitted is not usually painful. The NHS notes that teeth may be sore for a few days after they are fitted. Many people feel the same after an adjustment. Soft food and a simple over-the-counter painkiller, if it is safe for you and taken as the pack directs, usually help. Brackets can rub the cheeks at first; a little dental wax over them helps. Call us if the pain lasts more than a few days.
Are retainers included in the braces cost?
Ask, because quotes differ. The British Orthodontic Society describes retainers as essential in almost all cases, because teeth can drift back after braces come off. The Oral Health Foundation notes that they are usually worn day and night at first, then at night.
